How To Recognize An Emergency

Many serious conditions can cause critical emergencies. The best general advice is to seek prompt emergency veterinary care.

At Rocky Gorge Animal Hospital, we become particularly concerned when a pet:

  • Collapses or becomes very weak
  • Has severe diarrhea or repetitive vomiting
  • Bleeds
  • Losses its appetite for more than 24 hours
  • Has lethargy persisting for more than 24 hours
  • Cannot urinate or defecate
  • Breathes rapidly, shallowly, or with difficulty
  • Develops a severe cough
  • Ingests a poison
  • Sustains trauma (is hit by an automobile, jumps from a window, or sustains other cuts or injuries)
